The Benefits of Rosemary Oil for Natural Hair
I always prefer, if at all possible, to use natural products when caring for my Afro Caribbean hair. I feel they actually work better than some of the highly processed items available on the shelves, especially when the ingredients list contains enough weird sounding chemicals to shake a stick at.
Herbs have much to offer in the way of hair conditioning and treating any problems that might occur, such as a dry itchy scalp, without causing additional issues, and essential herb oils are the ideal form to use, either directly or mixed into a carrier oil.
The oil extracted from the herb rosemary has been used for centuries to treat scalp and hair conditions, increase growth and for preventative hair care. It’s also great for enhancing memory and concentration, whilst reducing stress and anxiety.
Rosemary oil can positively affect the symptoms and signs of:
- Dry hair or scalp
- Itchy scalp
- Hair loss
- Grey hair
How to Use Rosemary Oil
There are several methods for applying the oil to your hair, but the most common is to mix the pure essential oil into a carrier, such as almond or olive, and massage this through your hair, from root to tip.
These conditions, being very similar, can be treated similarly. Mix 10 – 12 drops of rosemary oil with your favorite shampoo and conditioner. Wash and condition your hair as normal, massaging the mixture into the scalp – it should feel very soothing and smell gorgeous. Leave the conditioner on for up to 20 minutes, before rinsing well. If you prefer something a little more stimulating, mix 3 drops of rosemary oil and 3 drops of lavender essential oil with a little witch hazel and massage it into the scalp. This can be done daily and will really help with dry, flaky scalps.
Hair Loss/Increase Hair Growth
By stimulating blood flow and increasing the nutrient uptake, a scalp massage with rosemary oil can improve the health of the hair follicles. This leads to a reduction in hair loss, and a speeding up of healthy hair growth. Mix 6 – 7 drops of rosemary essential oil into a small quantity of carrier oil, such as olive or jojoba, and massage well into the scalp. Leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. This can be part of your daily regimen and you should notice a difference within a few weeks.
Reducing the Appearance of Grey Hair
Amazingly rosemary has the ability to reduce the impact of grey hair. Mix 5 – 6 drops of rosemary oil and the same of sage essential oil into a carrier oil or conditioner. Massage the mixture into your hair and leave it on for as long as possible. The two herb oils together turn your gray hair a little darker, thus disguising it. If you repeat this process regularly, then your grey will gradually disappear.
I’ve tried different oils, but this one is my favorite.
This product is is 100% pure therapeutic grade oil. It not only has the most amazingly fresh, lively aroma, but I can’t fault it on performance. As so little is used for each treatment, the bottle lasts for months, but there are other sizes available, too. Mixed in with carrier oils and conditioners, I use it regularly on my hair, which has never looked better!
